The woman who accused South African President Jacob Zuma of rape, Fezekile Ntsukela Kuzwayo has died. Her death was announced by her family in a statement on Sunday.

“It is with our deepest sorrow that the Kuzwayo family announces the passing of our daughter Fezekile Ntsukela Kuzwayo. In our family she was lovingly known as Fezeka‚ and in the public domain her supporters called her Khwezi‚” the statement read.

They described her as: “A loving soul. A daughter‚ a sister and an aunt we will forever hold dear in our hearts. We loved her in life‚ let us never forget her after death.”

Kuzwayo became famous after she accused Zuma of raping her about 10 years ago before he was acquitted in May 2006. It has however not been determined if her death is due to HIV/AIDS she was reportedly diagnosed of in 1990.

Her family said a private funeral service will be held for close family and friends. It said a date for a public memorial will be announced later
