All Progressives Congress, APC, chiefs from Abia, South East Nigeria, have bickered over the defection of former governor Orji Uzor Kalu to the ruling party. Kalu, two-time governor of Abia, recently abandoned the Progressives Peoples Alliance, PPA, a political party he founded, for the ruling party. Donatus Nwankpa, chairman, Abia, APC, believes Kalu is an “asset” to the APC in the South East, where it suffers apathy from leadingconservative politicians, most of who are members of now-opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
“Orji Uzor Kalu is an asset to the party in the state, the Southeast and the country as a whole. I am sure he will use his wealth of experience in politics to grow the party in the zone. It is one of the landmark achievements of the leadership of the APC.The ruling PDP has become jittery with the influx of eminent politicians into the APC. The PDP is already afraid of 2019,” Nwankpa allegedly told Vanguard.
“Today, we are witnesses to the number of bigwigs in Abia and southeast who have joined the party. It shows that we are becoming formidable and remains a party to beat in 2019 general election. I want to assure you that more aggrieved personalities are going to join the party.”
However, Paul Ikonne, former governorship candidate of Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, one of the parties that formed the APC, disagrees.
“There is nothing to celebrate about Orji Kalu joining the party. If every person in Nigerian politics plays like Orji Kalu plays, you will find out that we won’t make headway,” Ikonne was quoted to have said.
