President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed budget padding will "never" recur under his "watch". The President tweeted he spoke on budget padding to members of the Governance Support Group (CSG) during a visit. "I made it clear that I will remove any sign of padding in the 2017 budget document. It will never happen again under my watch".
President Buhari's avowal contradicts Ita Enang, his senior special adviser on national assembly matters. In August, Enag stated the allegation of budget padding against four principal officers of the House of Representatives was a hoax. The accused were Speaker Yakubu Dogara, Deputy Speaker Yusuff Lasun, Minority Leader, Leo Ogor and the Chief Whip, Doguwa. The allegation was leveled against the quartet by Abdulmumin Jibrin, former chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation.
Enang at the time said: “We have given explanation on every issue. There is nothing, to our knowledge, like padding of the budget. The budget, as assented to by the President, is the budget passed by the National Assembly and it is being executed."
