The Niger Delta Avengers, a militant group, says its continuing bombing of oil installations in the beleaguered region is a repudiation of the leaders purporting to be representing it in talks with the federal government. The said group, the Pan Niger Delta Elders Forum, PANDEF, is led by Edwin Clark, a former federal commissioner.
Aside the Niger Delta Avengers, other militant groups in the region have rejected the Clark-led group, in a statement jointly issued on Sunday.
Tony Alagbakereowei, Ebi Abakoromor and Jaspa Ayabeke, speaking for the groups, said the PANDEF is sabotaging the region’s interest by its 16-point demands put forward to the federal government.
‘’The same set of leaders, who failed to develop our region during their days of leadership can never be given the opportunity and mandate to represent us the the expected talks with the Federal Government. Our leaders should not forget that it was due to their incapability to develop our region that led to this renewed militancy.
‘’On the 16-point placed before the president, none of our demands was presented. One of the most important demands that was expected on the frontline of the demands is the increment of the 13 percent Derivation Fund and payment of the same directly to the oil-bearing communities.
The groups, however, urged Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari to set up a committee that will interact directly with their chosen representatives.
