Former Arsenal forward Paul Merson has said that despite the Gunners’ current run of form, they are yet to prove they can win the Premier League title. Arsenal have gone unbeaten since their opening day nightmare in the hands of Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium.
Merson said the team has begun to show signs of failing. He pointed the side’s 4-1 win at Sunderland saying the game had lingered at 1-1 before a seven minute charge delivered three goals to secure the victory. He also said the team had been held by minnows, Middlesbrough and could have lost but for some sharp reflexes of the goalkeeper.
“No, I don’t see it,” he said in the Daily Star.
“They played Middlesbrough at home and were very lucky to get a result. They were 1-1 with 15 minutes to go against Sunderland.”
Arsenal also played a 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur before the International break with their only goal coming from a Kevin Wimmer own goal. Merson believes Chelsea, who the gunners bashed 3-0, are better contenders for the title.
“I’m a Chelsea fan and I’d be disappointed if Chelsea finish above Man City and didn’t win the Premier League.”
The Blues have claimed five league victories on the bounce, without conceding a goal, and are now the closet challengers to Jurgen Klopp’s table-topping Liverpool.
