Suspected miscreants Tuesday reportedly launched a fresh attack on Otodo Gbame community, at Ikate, Lekki area of Lagos State.
It was alleged the invaders in cahoots with policemen set fire to some of abodes of the Egun settlers living on the land. Some of the residents were said to have jumped into the river to avoid being caught in the arson or killed.
A resident of the area, Roseline Agbo, said she and other neighbors jumped into the river, thinking the problem would escalate into the previous attack.
“The policemen led the attackers. I was one of those who ran into the water. We thought the policemen would shoot again.
“But they started burning buildings. The smoke is still billowing as I speak”, she said.
But the state commissioner of police, Fatai Owoseni, stated that the Egun community had been in a protracted communal clash. He added that the police were in the area to maintain peace.
“In the Otodo Gbame incident, there has been no demolition in the area. The police did not at any time engage in demolition or setting fire to any house. To put the facts straight, that community had been embroiled in ethnic clashes”, he said.
