Niger State governor, Muazu Babangida Aliyu, has said that Muslims who marry more than one wife do so because they misinterprete the Quran. Speaking at the annual lecture series organised by Newgate College of Technology, Aliyu said the Holy Book said a man could take more than one wife only if he could be faithful and fair to them. Aliyu said that it was impossible for a man to be both fair and faithful to two women at the same time therefore making the stand of the religion on polygamy clear.
“Those that have married more than one wife and claimed that the scriptures allow it are doing so ignorantly and out of the tenets of Islam.
“What the law says is that if you can be faithful and fair to two wives, you are allowed to take more than one wife. But I don’t see how a man can be faithful and fair to more than one wife at a time,” he said.
He also said contrary to President Muhammadu Buhari’s statement in Germany that his wife belonged in the kitchen and the other room, Islam actually says the man should be in the kitchen.
“The woman should only be in the ‘inner room,’ while the men should provide all the needs of the woman, including making purchases from the market for the use of the family.
“Islam does not permit women to go out indiscriminately, as they are supposed to be in the house taking care of the children,” Vanguard quoted him to have said.
Aliyu, however, said with the recession currently ravaging the Nigerian economy,, it was advisable for both husband and wife to work hand-in-hand to by supporting each other for the good of their family and society.
