Super Eagles handler Gernot Rohr has revealed the reason behind Chelsea boss, Antonio Conte’s decision to ignore Mikel Obi. The German tactician, who is currently preparing his charges for the World Cup qualifier showdown against Algeria, said the decision was traceable to Mikel’s appearance at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Rohr, praising Mikel’s top form in training, said it was difficult to imagine why Conte would take such decision especially when the player was doing so well in training. He slammed the Italian for punishing the midfielder’s loyalty to his country.
“I cannot punish a player who loves his country and shows that he loves the Green jersey.
“I spoke about this with Mikel and the club’s technical director (Michael Emenalo). Mikel is training very well and he plays games in training with the big players at Chelsea.
“There is a reason why Mikel is not playing for Chelsea right now and that reason is because he played for Nigeria at the (2016) Olympics.
“He was punished for that,” Rohr said.
Rohr has said that the Chelsea midfielder will plat the full 90 minutes of the clash unless he is found to be unable to last the full duration.
The Eagles will play against the Algerians on Saturday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom.
