By Bola Kougbe

Rivers State Deputy Governor, Ipalibo Banigo, has ordered the re-arrest of the five men who allegedly gang-raped a 15-year-old girl after forcing her to ingest an overdose known as Tramadol.

Banigo gave the order Tuesday, in Port Harcourt while reacting to reports that the police had released the suspects. She also urged the force to ensure thorough investigation of the case.

“Such action is counterproductive; it will encourage rapists to be on the rampage in the state. We all need to do things that will discourage crime”, she said.

It was reported that the victim was raped by the suspects at Abirima Community, Oyigbo Local Government Area of the state. She was allegedly forced to swallow an overdose of analgesic.

The Deputy Governor said that ‘rape is an inhuman act and capable of leading to several illnesses including death’. She added that a full scale investigation into the matter is expected in order to bring the perpetrators of the inhuman act to justice.
