The Senate Thursday passed a bill on the establishment of the National Poverty Eradication Commission, NPEC.
Rabiu Kwankwaso, (APC, Kano Central), who sponsored the bill said it would assist government to ameliorate poverty and provide a regulatory framework for its programmes and policies.
Kwankwaso explained that the National Poverty Eradication Programme, NAPEP, and Subsidy Re-investment and Empowerment Programme, SURE-P, failed because they lacked legal and regulatory frameworks.
Also, Senate President, Bukola Saraki lauded the move. “Eradicating poverty is the responsibility of government and establishing a commission on this was a right step,” Saraki said.
