The House of Representatives, Thursday, directed the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Minister, Muhammed Bello to stop arbitrary collection of tax.
The House also asked its Committee on FCT to make inquiries on indiscriminate tax collection, tenement rate and other rates imposed on residents.
The committee is also required to probe the FCT Inland Revenue Service Board as to why it has not begun operations, in spite of the House resolve.
Orkey-Jev Emmanuel, Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Rules and Business, noted that certain individuals had disguised themselves and forcefully collected taxes and tenement rates from residents without consulting the relevant authorities.
Emmanuel said the National Assembly had authorized the FCT Internal Revenue Board to collect taxes and tenement rates through the FCT Internal .Revenue Service Act 2015.
“This portends an affront on the FCT Inland Revenue Service Act and tax laws of the federation and it’s aimed at defrauding unsuspecting members of the public. The agency empowered to collect taxes and rates in the FCT has not been set-up, thus allowing all manner of receipts and competing all sorts of money from unsuspecting innocent, law abiding residents,” he said.
