The heat between the Nigerian Senate and Hammed Ali, comptroller-general, Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, became fiercer on Wednesday. The Senate during plenary had read a letter by an assistant comptroller-general conveying Ali’s inability to appear before the upper chamber on Wednesday. Piqued, the Senate believed Ali affronted it by not personally signing the letter.
Following debates by the senators on the matter, Senator Bukola Saraki, president of Senate, hit the gavel on the resolution that Ali must appear before the legislature on Wednesday.
Earlier, the Senate had ordered the retired colonel (Ali) to appear before it in Customs uniform, which he had not worn since his appointment. Ali defended his action, saying his status as a former uniformed man is an alibi for him not to wear another.
