A senator has been caught engaging a 17-year-old boy for sex in an hotel room. The police claimed they smelt the odour of marijuana and found a pack of condom in a backpack inside the room. The affected lawmaker is 35-year-old Ralph Shortey, US Republican lawmaker from Oklahoma.
Following the incident, Shortey is facing three felony counts, including engaging in child prostitution. The senator was booked at a local jail on Thursday afternoon and later granted a bond set at $100,000.
Republican and Democratic politicians from Oklahoma called on Shortey to resign. “The charges against him do not reflect the character and decorum that we expect of an elected official,” said Oklahoma’s Governor Mary Fallin.
The Senate also took a position on him such as stripping him of his office space, removing him from committee positions and canceling his reserved parking space.
