Some high school students are among at least 18 people confirmed to have died after a large tree fell on them at a popular waterfall spot in Kintampo, Ghana. About 22 others were said to be injured in the mishap and taken to the hospital. The dead students were reportedly students of the Wenchi Senior High School, and some tourists.
The British Broadcasting Corporation, BBC, quoted the police as explaining that the students were swimming during a storm when the freak accident happened.
Rescue teams used chainsaws to cut through the fallen tree and free those trapped underneath, local media report.
Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo has tweeted his condolences to the families of the victims.
