A referee in Portugal’s lower tier league has been attacked by a fan after a 1-1 match between Vila Cha de Sa and Molelos. The fan yelled, “gatuno”, meaning “thief”, before he attacked Luis Fonseca.
The fan dragged the referee from his car while it was raining and assaulted him. Fonseca red carded the home side’s scorer in the 94th minute which is believed to have provoked the fan to lay an ambush for the referee.
In addition, former referee Duarte Gomes claims 36 referees have been assaulted in Portugal in the last 5 months. Police presence is currently not mandatory at lower league games.
