Police in Kaduna state, northern Nigeria, have arrested a journalist, Midat Joseph, working for the Leadership newspaper. Joseph, who is Kaduna correspondent of the newspapers, was reportedly arrested by men of the criminal investigations department (CID) around 4:30pm on Wednesday. A report said he was detained at the Metro police station at the Panteka area of the state.
The Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, Kaduna chapter, said Joseph’s offence and whereabouts were unknown. Yusuf Adamu, NUJ chairman in the state, claimed the state police command had shunned inquiry as to why the journalist was arrested.
“We don’t know why he was arrested and we want to see the police commissioner to find out the reasons for this,” he said.
“We will brief our members after seeing the police commissioner,” Adamu said.
