Collapsed Building: Lagos Govt Says Developer Refused ‘Stop Work’ Order

The Lagos State Government on Friday disclosed that the developers of the three-storey building, which collapsed in Ilasamaja on Thursday, unsealed a ‘stop work’ order on the building and continued construction before the incident.

Wasiu Anifowose, Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, told newsmen after an assessment of the site, that some officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency, LASBCA, disapproved the building, but the developers illegally broke the seal to continue work.

Anifowose said LASBCA officers in charge of the area where the incident occurred had, two weeks before the collapse, disapproved the development because it was being built contrary to building regulations.

“This particular building had been monitored and had been sealed off,” he said.
