A journalist, Danjuma Katsina, has been detained by the police in Katsina state over a Facebook post. The police said the journalist made “injurious comments” about a newly elected member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives from the state, Mansur Mashi.
Katsina’s colleague, Zaharadeen Umar, said the police invited him (the journalist) to the state’s Police Command around 8 p.m. on Saturday to explain himself over a complaint the lawmaker filed.
However, the police detained the journalist despite efforts by the Katsina state branch of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, and officials of the Nigeria Guild of Editors, NGE, to secure his release.
According to PREMIUM TIMES, Katsina had analysed the outcome of the Mashi/Dutsi bye-election conducted in May, wondering why Mashi was allowed to contest the polls despite facing corruption allegation in court.
