A 45-year-old man, Sikiru Adebayo, has allegedly beaten his son, Uthman, to death for stealing a neighbour’s waist belt.
The accused was arraigned before an Osun State Magistrates’ Court on one count-charge of murder. The prosecutor, Duro Adekunle, told the court that the accused committed the offence on July 31 in the Abidogun Zone 7 area of Osogbo.
He explained that Adebayo committed the crime in a house he shared with his deceased son.
He added that the offence contravened Section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Vol. 11, Laws of Osun, 2003.
However, Adebayo’s plea was not taken.
Also, the defense counsel, Mudashiru Balogun, said a legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions preferred a manslaughter charge against his client.
Balogun argued that the charge before the court was wrong because it read murder.
The presiding magistrate, Fatimoh Sodamade, ordered an amendment of the charge sheet to reflect manslaughter as instructed by the DPP.
She also ruled that the accused be kept in police custody till the next adjourned date.
