The Burkina Faso Football Federation, FBF, is appealing FIFA’s directive to replay a 2018 World Cup Qualifier between South Africa and Senegal, the Court of Arbitration for Sport, CAS, has revealed.
South Africa won the game 2-1 last November in controversial circumstances, but FIFA on September 6, ordered the tie to be replayed due to ‘match manipulation’ by the referee, Joseph Lamptey.
CAS, said it received the petition on Monday, in which FBF, accused the World Football Governing Body of abuse of power: “We continues to oppose the decision that is tainted by abuse of power and irrelevant to the texts of the international football authority,” part of the petition reads.
Burkina Faso are currently top of Group D on six points with Cape Verde, but are ahead on goals difference after four matches. Senegal have the chance to top the group if they win the replay in November and pick the sole ticket for the World Cup eventually—a situation the Burkina FA is petitioning against.
