The Lagos State Prison Watch team has recommended community services as punishment for minor and first-time offenders instead of jail term.
The team comprises state counsels from Citizens’ Right, Office of the Public Defender, OPD, and Community Service.
Also, they have offered free legal services to inmates of the Badagry Prisons in a bid to decongest the overcrowded prisons.
According to Clara Ibirogba, Director of Citizens Rights, Ministry of Justice and the Head of the Lagos State Prison Watch team, the advocacy for community service would help in decongesting the prisons.
“State counsels from the OPD shall be offering free legal services to indigent inmates who cannot afford the services of a lawyer, to facilitate their release through the courts, as this will aid in decongesting the prisons.”
