A middle aged man was reportedly caught with human skull and other body parts in Mowe area of Ogun state on Thursday.
Following the development, residents in the area allegedly beat him to a pulp before he was rescued by policemen who took him to the station.
A community leader who spoke on the condition of anonymity said the suspect was accosted by some residents after a driver raised the alarm.
“The suspicious cab driver raised the alarm, stopping abruptly on the way. Residents and passersby opened the sack and found the remains.
“They pounced on him because they thought he was a ritual killer. He was about to be lynched when the policemen rescued him,” he said.
An undisclosed source said that within few minutes, the station had become a ‘tourist center’ as news filtered into the community that the man was being kept at the station.
The suspect was ordered to bring out the parts, before he was ordered to return them into the sack.
The source said policemen at the division were almost overrun by the crowd, some of whom climbed the fence to catch a glimpse of the human parts, which were stuffed in a sack.
However, a relative of the suspect present at the scene told the police that the decomposing body parts was the owner of a plot of land in one Arigbawonwo community in the area.
He had been buried there 10 years ago by his family members, who later sold the land. The new owner, however, exhumed the body and threw it somewhere.
The suspect was said to be contracted by the deceased family to pack and re-bury the remains
So, he put them in a sack and got a cab to convey him to where he intended to dispose them of.
When asked why the suspect didn’t involve the police in the disposal of the corpse, the relative explained that the suspect never thought that the matter would assume any crisis proportion.
The suspect said, “the family of the deceased contracted us to dispose of the body. But they didn’t say we needed police clearance.”
The Ogun state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed the incident.
He said, “The man was caught with some human parts and was about to be lynched when he was rescued by the police.
“He has been transferred to the Anti-kidnaping and Anti-cultism Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Eleweran.
He claimed in his statement that the corpse was that of a relation and he was going to re-bury it when he was caught. He is being investigated.”
