Godwin Okpara, a former Super Eagles defender, has been arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate Court for allegedly assaulting his wife, Linda Oladoyinbo. He was said to have flogged the victim, causing her severe injury.
The police prosecutor, Simon Imohwa, told the court that Okpara committed the offence in August 2016 at Oduduwa Street, G.R.A, Ikeja area of Lagos state.
Okpara pleaded not guilty to the lone count charge of assault. His counsel, Malachi Odo, begged the court to grant Okpara bail in the “most liberal term”, saying he had served the country.
Imohwa urged the court to accept the prayer and grant the accused bail.
Presiding magistrate, B.O. Osusanmi, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum. She said they must be staff of reputable organizations. The case was adjourned till January 29, 2018.
Okpara participated in the 1998 FIFA World Cup, 2000 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2000 Summer Olympics. In August 2005, he was arrested by French police on charges of raping his 13-year-old adopted daughter. He was found guilty and imprisoned in June 2007 for 10 years. His wife, Linda, also bagged 15 years jail term for maltreating the minor.
The former Paris Saint-Germain, PSG, star was released in August 2011, ahead of his 10-year jail term, on the condition that he will be deported to Nigeria.
