The Federal Government has redeemed its pledge to the female National Basketball Team, D’Tigress, for winning Gold medal at the 2017 Afro Basketball Women Championship which took place in Mali Bamako in August.
Presenting cheques of N1, 000,000 each to the fourteen players and N500, 000 each to eight coaching crew totaling N17.5m, the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung remarked that “Sport has remained a veritable tool for promoting unity and friendship.
Speaking at a presentation ceremony attended by officials of the Nigeria Basketball Federation and representative of the gold-winning female National Basket Team led by the Vice President of the Federation, Mr Babatunde Ogunade, Dalung commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his outstanding contributions to the development of sports in Nigeria.
Responding, the Vice President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, Mr. Abass Babatunde Ogunade expressed appreciation for the quick redemption of the pledge, which he acknowledged is a remarkable departure from experiences of the past when pledges to athletes were not fulfilled.
Ogunade also used the opportunity to appeal to the Federal government for further assistance as the team prepares for the World Basketball fiesta in Spain as well as the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Australia next year.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Adesola Olusola, told reporters that the approved money would hit bank accounts of those concerned before the end of the week.
