Rafael Garcia, Floyd Mayweather Junior’s trainer for twenty years, has died at the age of 88.
Garcia, helped to save Mayweather’s career when he was plagued by hand problems by offering to wrap his hands before fights.
Mayweather, paid tribute to the former cornerman on twitter: “RIP Grand Dad [sic]. I will always love you.”
Before joining ‘The Money Team’, Garcia helped Ishe Smith become world champion. Smith said: “Before there even was ‘The Money Team,’ before he got all that fame by working with Mayweather, he was always there helping fighters and was graceful and respectful. He always was supportive of me and my career and he will truly be missed”.
Garcia, a native of Mexico, spent seven decades in the sport and worked with many boxing superstars. He was known for his selflessness and caring nature.
He was inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame in August 2017. His family said burial plans are ongoing.
