Lionel Messi has said that he may retire from Argentina’s national team if they have a bad outing at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The Barcelona forward, who had announced his retirement from the Albiceleste after losing at the Copa America final in 2016, said a number of the players would follow suit if the team failed to impress in Russia.
“If we do badly at the World Cup, we will all have to disappear from the national team. It’ll be difficult for some to stay on”, he told TyC Sports.
Also, reacting to Cristiano Ronaldo’s Ballon d’Or win, Messi said that he no longer sees individual prizes as a priority. He said he was more concerned with winning team laurels with his club and country.
“In truth, I am far more interested in team titles,” he explained during Wednesday’s interview with TyC Sports.
“It was a beautiful feeling to win all that I have won, above all the first few times. Once that had happened I started to give even less priority to the individual prizes.
“I would love to keep achieving things with the guys, above all Champions League and Ligas, to win things with the national priority, we got so close and it wasn’t to be, that has always been my priority,” he said.
Cristiano Ronaldo beat the Argentine forward and Neymar to win his fifth Ballon D’Or title on Thursday to equal his record.
