A Nasarawa State High Court sitting in Lafia, on Wednesday, sentenced one John Yakubu to death by hanging for beheading his neighbour’s a seven-year old son, Samuel Danjuma.
Yakubu was arrested by operatives of the Department for State Service, DSS, with an accomplice, Ishaya Daklung in 2012, when the crime was allegedly committed.
Justice James Abundaga, in his judgement, said the court found the accused guilty of culpable homicide punishable by death, based on his confessional statement. He said the death sentence was in line with Section 221 of the penal code.
The trial judge held that Yakubu had in his statement lured the boy to a stream in Agwan Galadima in Nasarawa Local Government. According to him, the convict drowned his victim before removing his head and hiding it in a polythene bag.
Abundaga, however, sentenced the second accused, Daklung, to four years in prison with hard labour for being in possession of human head, saying that Daklung’s sentence was in line with Section 219 of the penal code.
The head of the victim had been deposited at the Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital morgue in Lafia since the incidence.
