One of the missionaries, David, who later regained freedom said Shirley had been killed for playing Amazing Grace on a guitar to lift their spirits. He said although they did not see who had shot their colleague, it was obvious he had been shot by a member of the gang. He said they had jumped into the water in fear but were taken out by their abductors. He told UK Telegraph that the women among them had been scared they would be raped but were calm after ‘General’, the gang leader, told the others he would kill them if they touched the women.
