The Ikeja Magistrate Court was told on Wednesday how 59-year-old Gabriel Bassey allegedly raped and impregnated a 14-year-old girl (name withheld). Bassey from Ijegun, a suburb of Lagos, is facing two counts bothering on sexual assault and rape.
The Prosecutor, Raphael Donny, a police sergeant, said the accused committed the offences at his house, in December 2017. The prosecutor said Bassey forcefully had sex with the girl after luring her with food to his room.
“The accused raped the girl and threatened to kill her if she tells anyone,” said Donny. The lid blew off Donny’s deed when the victim’s mother discovered she had missed her period and consequently inquired. A medical test later done on the victim revealed she had taken in, a discovery that led to Bassey’s arrest. Bassey’s alleged offences violate Sections 135(1) and 259 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The accused man was refused bail by the presiding magistrate, Folakemi Davies-Abegunde, who also directed that the former be kept in Kirikiri Prisons. She further said his case file be duplicated, with a copy sent to the Department of Public Prosecution, DPP, for advice.
Newsbreak.ng gathered that under the state’s criminal law, such offences attract life imprisonment.
The case was adjourned until Feb. 26.
