Buhari, Sanusi, Jega For Lagos-Kano Summit


President Muhammadu Buhari, along with Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi and Professor Attahiru Jega, former head of Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, are scheduled to attend the Lagos-Kano Investment Summit. The theme of the summit, organisers say, is “States Partnership as a tool for Sustainable Economic Development”.
A Lagos government’s statement said other dignitaries billed for the event holding at the Jubilee Chalets, Epe, Lagos, between February 28 and March 1, 2018, include Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu and economist, Professor Pat Utomi.
Akinyemi Asade, the commissioner for finance, Lagos state, briefed journalists on Tuesday that the summit would focus on security, governance, ease of doing business, agriculture, tourism, internally generated revenue, education and infrastructure in key areas of power, transportation and urban waste management.
Asade stressed that the two states decided to take “leading role towards maximizing the unique comparative and competitive economic and investment opportunities of both states.”
“We (Lagos and Kano) both have the highest population and cosmopolitan spread in Nigeria, while I make bold to say that, the performances of the two States in areas of economic reforms, improved their business environments and contributed significantly in boosting Nigeria’s “Ease of Doing Business” Global Ranking from 169 to 145 for the year 2018 as measured in 2017”.
Moreover, Asade said at the end of the summit, the two states will sign Memorandum of Understanding on areas of collaboration. He added that the summit “will offer a constructive case study for other states of the federation to emulate”.
Dr Shamsudeen Usman, the chairman of the Technical Committee for the summit, harped on the “similarities and differences” between the two states, and said that the summit was designed to foster mutually beneficial positives.”
