Samuel Ayara, a journalist at the Akwa Ibom State Broadcasting Corporation, was on Wednesday assaulted by a policemen at the State House of Assembly.
Reports say Ayara was attacked with tear gas and beaten by the policemen. He claimed he had been going round the offices of the lawmakers to interview their wives, who had come to celebrate Valentine's Day with them. He said the policeman, attached to Uduak Udoudo, representing Ikot Abasi State Constituency, had accosted him. He explained that he had demanded an explanation why he was addressed with disrespect. His question had sparked fury as other policemen in the complex attacked him afterwards.
The Chairman, House Committee on Information, Ime Okon, when contacted, said the issue had not been reported to him.
The state Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Mr. Patrick Albert, condemned the assault and said he would investigate and meet with the Speaker on the issue.
