Some senators have walked out of a joint session of the Senate and the House of Representatives in protest of the amendment to the Electoral Act. The aggrieved senators, 10 in number, say the amendment to the election timetable is targeted at President Muhammadu Buhari.
Suleiman Nazif, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission, had presented the report at the plenary on Wednesday. Bukola Saraki, Senate President, had put the adoption of the report to a voice vote saying it was unecessary to debate it since it was from a committee which had compiled versions from both chambers.
At the end of the voice vote, the report was adopted. Saraki ruled against three senators who had raised points of order to protest against the adoption.
