Robbers, who stormed about five banks in the Offa Local Government Area of Kwara state on Thursday, have reportedly killed six policemen and six others. Eyewitnesses said the men blew up bank doors with dynamites and were not challenged by the military throughout the one-hour robbery.
The banks allegedly affected by the raids are Guaranty Trust Bank, Zenith Bank, First Bank, Union Bank and EcoBank. PUNCH Metro reports that that the robbers, who entered the area around 4pm, shot continuously to scare aware some residents. They reportedly blocked roads from both Ilorin and Oshogbo and entered Owode Police Station in the metropolis, where they shot dead four policemen and some complainants. Among those reportedly killed by the robbers were a police officer, who was expected to retire in the next few months, and a pregnant policewoman.
The robbers were said to have made away with millions of naira after shattering bank buildings and terrorising workers as well as customers. A witness told PUNCH Metro that corpses littered the road after the operation. Another on social media said the robbers had burnt many cars and were not confronted by any military force.
Ajayi Okasanmi, the state Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the robbery but he could not confirm the number of dead people and how much was stolen. He said more policemen had been deployed to restore calm in the area.
