Shamed Senator Dino Melaye is under medical examination at the Trauma Centre of the National Hospital, Abuja, said the PUNCH. The newspaper also said the police handcuffed the embattled senator to his bed. However, Senator Bukola Saraki, president of Senate, debunked Melaye was in cuffs. Saraki, alongside others, had visited Melaye on Wednesday.
Saraki said, “He (Melaye) is on fluids; he is being seen by cardiologists and all specialists.”
“He (Melaye) is stable and being monitored. We pray for him to fully recover soon. He is not in handcuffs.”
Senator Melaye landed in the hospital due to injury he sustained while making a botched escape from the police. He reportedly jumped off a police vehicle conveying him to Kogi, where he is expected to be tried along with two others for illegal gun possession. He was initially admitted into Zanklin Hospital, Mabushi, Abuja, from where the police rearrested him and took him to the National Hospital.
It was double whammy for Senator Melaye with the Independent National Electoral Commission announcing it would commence his recall from senate. Many of the senator’s constituents had signed off a petition for his recall, a situation Senator Melaye said was orchestrated by his state governor, Yahaya Bello.
