A 28-year-old motorcycle rider, Gbenga Olubunmi, has been arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly beating up a policeman.
The incident happened at Megida Ayobo area of Lagos State. The policeman, Etute Patrick was said to have intercepted Olubunmi around 1pm on April 23 for riding a motorcycle without plate number.
In an attempt to prevent his motorcycle from being taken away, the defendant allegedly attacked the officer with fist blows.
It was gathered that two other motorcycle riders joined in beating up the officer, who was eventually saved by his colleagues. Olubunmi was subsequently arrested and taken to the Ayobo Division. But the two other riders were said to have escaped on their motorcycles.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Unah M told the court that the offence contravened Sections 411 and 174 (a) (b) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.
The accused, who is standing trial on a two count charge of assault and conspiracy however, pleaded not guilty.
The presiding magistrate, A.A Fashola granted the defendant N50,000 bail with two sure sureties in like sum. The case was adjourned till May 28, 2018.
