Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has revealed what manager, Jose Mourinho told them in the half-time of their derby clash with Manchester City on Saturday. The England international said the Portuguese manager had told them not to allow City celebrate their title victory by beating them.
“The manager didn’t have to say much at half time as we knew ourselves as players it was a poor performance. He said that we didn’t want to be the clowns standing there watching them get their title”, he disclosed.
The side was 2-0 down before a brace by Paul Pogba and a goal from Smalling grabbed them a stunning 2-3 win at the Etihad Stadium. The Cityzens would have been crowned Premier League Champions for the fifth time in their history if they had won.
Mourinho was also full of praise for his team after their victory. The former Chelsea coach said:“I told them at half time my midfield players couldn’t play any better than they had been playing. I was actually asking more from my central defenders to play with the ball.
“I’m happy for the fans, I know it’s important for them to beat local teams. Now we’ve beaten Liverpool and City close.
“Even if Manchester United don’t win another title in 50 years, they are still Manchester United.
“We are not the team that people think we are, we aren’t as bad as people think we are, I’m not as bad a manager as people think I am and the players aren’t as bad as people think they are,” he added.
