Residents of the Ilaje community in the Makoko area of Lagos state on Wednesday stormed the Lagos State House of Assembly over the killing of three residents.
The protesters, chanting different solidarity songs, alleged that Jide Bakare, Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce on Land Grabbing, led a team of policemen who invaded the community on May 10, demolishing houses and killing residents.
Shina Loremikan, a human rights activist, and a founding member of the Committee for Defence of Human Rights, CDHR, who was also present at the protest, accused the government of negligence.
He claimed Saheed Olayinka Egbeyemi, the Chairman of Lagos Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit, had admitted on social media that Imohimi Edgal, Commissioner of Police and Governor Akinwunmi Ambode were not aware of the incident.
He however said the police later admitted that officers from Panti were involved in the operation. He said the head of the anti-terrorists group of the police and Bakare had led the team to the community.
S.O.B Agunbiade, the majority leader of the House, promised the protesters that the matter would be investigated.
