Sunday Ehindero, a former Inspector General of Police, alongside John Obaniyi, former commissioner of police, was on Thursday arraigned on a six-count charge for alleged fraud.
They were arraigned at an Apo District High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. They were accused of misusing N578 million (N557,995,065) donated by the Bayelsa State Government for the purchase of arms. The two defendants were alleged to have diverted the money into separate accounts belonging to them, thereby generating N16,412,315 in interest. They were said to have lied to the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission, ICPC, upon questioning that the interest was spent on official purposes, whereas the duo spent on personal purposes.
The defendants pleaded “not guilty” to the charge. The arraignment of the defendants followed a Supreme Court ruling ordering them to return to the lower court for their trial. The duo had made the high court suspend their trial pending the determination of their appeal at the Appeal Court and eventually the Supreme Court.
