The Super Eagles, on Tuesday, lost 2-3 to LaLiga giants, Atletico Madrid, in the maiden edition of the GOtv MAX Cup played at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.
Played before a full capacity crowd, the thrilling encounter saw the Super Eagles, largely made up of home-based players, give a good account of themselves as they matched Atletico's more experienced players skill for skill.
The Super Eagles drew the first blood in the 31st minute when the impressive Kelechi Nwakali beat Atletico keeper, Jan Oblak, with a rasping short from 20 yards. The lead did not endure, as the Europa League winners struck back quickly with a well taken goal by Angel Correa. The first half ended a goal apiece.
At the beginning of the second half, coach Diego Simeone introduced Fernando Torres to the admiration of the crowd, who chanted his name. The famous striker, who was playing his last match for the club, first tested the Eagles keeper with a well hit long range shot, which was beaten away.
But he was not to be denied. On 64 minutes, the former Liverpool and Chelsea hit man put his team ahead with a firm header. The Eagles did not let their heads drop, as Usman Mohammed equalised after a mesmerizing run.
Some generous defending, however, undid their impressive performance when Borja Caceres was allowed to grab the winner in the 85th minute to make the LaLiga giants the first winners of the GOtv MAX Cup.
