Some suspected herdsmen on Tuesday killed two mourners of the slain Catholic priests and 17 parishioners along the Naka/Makurdi Road in Benue.
The deceased were said to have been ambushed on their way from the funeral of the slain Catholics. A native told The Punch that the road had been abandoned due to the operations of the deadly herdsmen in the area. He said it was unclear why the deceased decided to use the route.
''Anyone coming to Makurdi from Naka has to pass through the major road to Taraku, making the journey of 30 minutes’ drive to result in two and a half hours’ journey.
''I think the deceased just decided to take the route; unfortunately, they were killed,” the local said.
Samuel Ortom, the state governor, confirmed the killing while receiving Prof. Wole Soyinka on Thursday.
