Donald Trump, US President has asked the country’s Department of Justice to investigate whether the Federal Bureau of Intelligence infiltrated his campaign with spies for political purposes.
Writing via Twitter on Monday, Trump stated that he would like to know if the action was directly approved either by his predecessor, Barrack Obama, or people within the previous administration.
“I hereby demand, and will do so officially tomorrow, that the Department of Justice look into whether or not the FBI/DOJ infiltrated or surveilled the Trump Campaign for Political Purposes - and if any such demands or requests were made by people within the Obama Administration!”, he tweeted.
Rod Rosenstein, the US Deputy Attorney-General, said action would be taken if any infiltration was found.
"If anyone did infiltrate or surveil participants in a presidential campaign for inappropriate purposes, we need to know about it and take appropriate action," Mr Rosenstein said in a statement.
Trump’s demand is coming after several US media reports alleged that the FBI had an informant who met campaign aides.
The US President is currently struggling to validate the legitimacy of his election following Rosenstein’s appointment of Special Counsel, Robert Muller. Muller has for over a year been investigating whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to influence the result of the 2016 US Presidential election.
