Serena Williams has revealed that her father and former coach, Richard Williams, was absent at her wedding because he “didn’t feel comfortable giving her away”.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion walked down the aisle alone when she got married to Reddit co-founder, Alexis Ohanian in November 2017.
In her new HBO documentary called “Being Serena”, she revealed her father had sent her a message about his intention not to be at her wedding.
She said, “He was in New Orleans, he had a suit, and I know he was really excited”, Serena said.
“But then he wrote me and said, ‘Serena, I don’t want you to be mad at me, but I just can’t walk you down the aisle. I’m not myself anymore. I’m just too nervous”.
The 36-year-old said she was not angry upon receiving the message. The mother of one said she was rather supportive of her father’s decision.
She added: “I replied him saying ‘Daddy, it’s okay, if you don’t want to come to the wedding at all, that’s okay too. I’m not going to be upset with you about it, so I don’t want you to be upset about it”.
Serena noted that some people could have acted differently, but she knows the struggles her dad, who suffered a stroke in 2016, had been through over the last few years.
The former World number one currently ranks 449 by the WTA due to her inactivity since giving birth to her daughter, Alexis Olympia, on September 1, 2017.
