The Teranga Lions of Senegal recorded Africa's first victory at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. In their first game, the Africans opened scoring in the 38th minute against Poland via an own goal by Thiago Cionek, who deflected Idris Gaye's shot into the net.
Senegal doubled their lead in the 60th minute after Mbaye Niang latched unto a back pass by a Polish defender. However, the Poles pulled a goal back four minutes from time, when Grzegorz Krychowiak headed home from a free kick.
The Aliu Cisse-led team have three points, and are now joint Group H leader with Japan, who earlier earned a 2-1 victory over Colombia.
