D’Tigers’ coach, Alex Iwora has said he will count on the leadership and experience of team captain, Ike Diogu, to lead Nigeria’s quest at the next phase of FIBA 2019 World Cup qualifiers.
Nigeria tops the group in the first leg of qualifiers played and will host other African teams in the second leg from June 26, at the Indoor Sport Hall of the National Stadium, Lagos.
“He knows that we have an unfinished business and he has embraced the leadership role as the captain of the D’Tigers. He is the foundation that holds us together”, Iwora said.
Having won three games, with three more to secure a place in the championship, the coach said he is optimistic the Sichuan Blue Whales of China forward can provide the needed experience for the young members of the team.
“Hopefully, he is going to keep leading these young players that are coming to the national team for the first time, teach them the right way and a very good way to represent Nigeria like he has been doing over the years,” Iwora added.
Diogu captained the team to victory at the 2015 Afrobasket championship hosted in Tunisia, before leading the team to silver two years later, where he bagged Most Valuable Player award.
Nigeria will tackle Uganda on June 29, before facing Rwanda and Mali on June 30 and July 1 respectively.
