June 12: Obasanjo Shuns Abiola’s Investiture

Olusegun Obasanjo, a former President, has absented himself from the investiture of Moshood Abiola, winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, as Grand Commander of the Federal Republic, GCFR.

He was represented by Kehinde Akinyemi, his spokesman, who said he was currently not in the country. He however did not state if his principal would have attended if he was in the country.

Also, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (rtd.), who annulled the 1993 election, was expectedly absent. He is however reported to be battling health issues which have seen him fly to Germany and Switzerland for medical checks.
The event was attended by Abiola’s children, Kola Abiola, Hafsat Abiola-Castello; state governors, top government officials and other prominent personalities from all walks of life.
