Kidnap kingpin, Chuckwueme Onwuamadike aka Evans has hired a new lawyer, Nuel Brown following the withdrawal of Olukoya Ogungbeje, his former lead defence counsel.
Ogungbeje, had on June 13 announced that he was withdrawing from the case following threats to his life and for personal reasons.
During court proceedings before an Ikeja High Court on Friday, it was revealed that Ogungbeje had written a letter to the court urging the judge to order the state police commissioner to provide protection for Evans. But Justice Hakeem Oshodi described the letter as abuse to the court.
Brown announced his appearance for Evans and Ogechi Uchechukwu, a co-defendant.
A.A Uzouow and Emmanuel Ochai announced appearance for Ifeanyi and Aduba, the fifth and sixth defendants respectively.
However, Brown asked the court for an adjournment to enable him go through the case file properly.
“My Lord, we took over this matter two weeks ago and we do not have the proper proof of evidence.
“With due respect to the honorable court, the learned counsel who was handling the matter before did not do a proper handing over and we have written to the prosecution to avail us with copy of the proof of evidence.
“We have asked the prosecution for the file orally and we will still write formally to that effect,” he said.
Justice Oshodi asked the counsels to prepare for the trial by applying for the necessary documents attached to the case.
He adjourned the matter till September 11, 2018 for continuation of trial.
