World Cup: LIVE UPDATE – Nigeria Vs Croatia

Good evening and welcome to our live blog of the Super Eagles of Nigeria versus Croatia game at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The game is being played at Kaliningrad Stadium in Russia.

The match referee is Sandro Ricci from Brazil

The anthems are being played; that of Croatia, followed by Nigeria’s own.

1′ KICKOFF: Nigeria begins proceedings at the Kaliningrad Stadium.

11′ A quick free-kick sees Mikel making the dashing run down the left wing, dispossesses Modric and crossed the ball for Ighalo, but it is caught by goalkeeper Subasic.

14′ Croatia move the ball quickly on a counter attack, Mandzukic tees up the ball for Perisic, who shot just sails over Uzoho’s goal post.

16′ Another chance for Croatia as Kramaric fires a low shot from about 20 meters, but the ball flew past the Nigerian goalpost.

22′ Injury scare for the Super Eagles as Leon Balogun gets a bloodied nose, following an aerial contest. Thankfully, he’s back on the pitch.

30′ Ivan Rakitic gets the game’s first yellow card on the half-hour mark for a challenge on Victor Moses.

31′ Kramaric teases Shehu Abdullahi on the right wing, floats in a cross, which is chested down by Mandzukic for Rebic but his shot is deflected for a Croatian corner kick.

32′ Nigeria 0-1 Croatia

Croatia gets the game first goal from the resulting corner kick. Luka Modric’s corner is headed by Mario Mandzukic, Ante Rebic then flicks the ball onto the body of Oghenekaro Etebo, who unfortunately diverts the ball into the net.

40′ Croatia almost doubled their lead. Rakitic floated in a lofted cross to Kramaric, whose header just flew over the crossbar.

42′ Rakitic heads down a long ball to Mandzukic, who runs across the Nigerian box and passes to Sime Vrsaljko, but the Croat was unsteadied and blasted the ball wide.

45+1′ Moses’ free-kick is headed down for Alex Iwobi, who cracks a fierce shot but is blocked by a sea of Croatian bodies.

HALFTIME: Referee Ricci blows the whistle to signal the end of the first half.

45′ Croatia’s Modric gets the second half of the game underway.

47′ An early chance for the Super Eagles. A Moses corner kick is met by Balogun, but was nicked off him by a Croatian player for another corner kick.

48′ Etebo delivers a beautiful cross-field pass to Moses, who tangles with his marker on the right-hand side and fires a left-footed shot which was off target.

59′ Brian Idowu sends in a cross into the box which is met by Ighalo, but his header was very feeble not to worry goalkeeper Subasic.

60′ SUBSTITUTION: Croatia make the first substitution, with Marcelo Brozovic coming on for Andrej Kramaric.

61′ SUBSTITUTION: Nigeria make their first change; Alex Iwobi going out for Ahmed Musa.

70′ PENALTY: Referee Ricci awards a penalty to Croatia after William Troost Ekong grabbed Mandzukic in the box during a corner kick. Ekong received a yellow card for the challenge.

72′ Nigeria 0-2 Croatia

Luka Modric cooly dispatches the resulting penalty past goalkeeper Uzoho to double Nigeria’s lead.

73′ SUBSTITUTION: Nigeria make their second change; with Odion Ighalo off for Kelechi Iheanacho.

76′ Iheanacho, seeking to make an immediate impact, receives the ball from Mikel, he dances his way into the box and fires a left-footed shot, which sailed wide.

78′ SUBSTITUTION: Ante Rebic out for Mateo Kovacic in Croatia’s second change.

79′ Perisic delivers a dangerous cross into the box for Kovacic, but is tipped away by Uzoho.

85′ SUBSTITUTION: Croatia make their final change; Mario Mandzukic exits the field for Marko Pjaca.

88′  SUBSTITUTION: Nigeria make their final change of the game; captain Mikel Obi removed for Simeon Nwankwo.

88′ Croatia’s substitute Brozovic gets a yellow card.

90′ ADDED TIME: Four minutes added by the referee.

90+2′ A quick break by the Croatians from a throw-in sees Kovavic get the ball, tries to play the ball under the arm of Uzoho but the goalkeeper calmly picks up the ball.

FULL TIME: Referee Ricci blows the whistle to signal the end of the game.

The final result: Nigeria 0-2 Croatia.
