Gianni Infantino, FIFA President, on Friday declared that Amaju Pinnick is the only individual recognised by the world’s football governing body as the President of the Nigerian Football Federation, NFF.
Infantino made the clarification while speaking with journalists in a press conference in Russia’s capital of Moscow, ahead of the 2018 World Cup final on Sunday.
According to the Swiss-Italian football administrator, there is no ambiguity on the situation in Nigerian football as Pinnick was duly elected as NFF President in accordance with FIFA’s statues.
He also stated that its affiliate members are fully aware of FIFA’s stance of non-interference in matters of football administration by other parties other than the football federations.
Infantino said, “The situation is very clear. Pinnick was duly elected some years ago, and FIFA is aware of all this.
“It is also clear to all within the family that there can be no interference in the running of the national federations by any party, especially those outside the football family.
“So, Pinnick is the President of NFF for FIFA, because he is the one elected.”
The FIFA president added that Nigeria as a member-association of FIFA, would then be at the risk of facing the world body’s sanctions if the situation continued as it is now.
Pinnick is currently embattled in a leadership tussle after the Solomon Dalung, the country’s Sports Minister, ordered him and his board to vacate the NFF secretariat for Chris Giwa.
Dalung hinged his decision on a Supreme Court order which nullified the election of Pinnick, which held in Warri, Delta State in 2014, and recognised that of Giwa, which held the same day in Jos, the Plateau state capital.
