An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court has ordered the remand of one Everness Onyebuchi, a 23-year-old employed uncle, at the Kirikiri prison, for allegedly defiling his 8-year-old niece (name withheld).
“The accused had sexual intercourse with the girl on several occasions,’’ Police prosecutor, Ezekiel Ayorinde told the court.
He said that the father of the victim accommodated the accused when he needed a place to stay.
“The accused started sleeping with her not long after he moved into the girl parents’ house due to lack of accommodation,” Ayorinde said.
“The housekeeper, who noticed changes in the girl’s behaviour and body, informed her parents.
“The girl’s parents interrogated her and she told them what her uncle used to do to her when nobody was at home.
“The case was reported and the accused was arrested,’’ the prosecutor said.
Ayorinde said that the defendant committed the offence in May, 2018, at the Oshodi area of the state. He said the offence contravened and punishable under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).
Presiding magistrate, B.O. Osunsanmi, who didn’t take the defendant’s plea, ruled that he be kept behind bars pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions, DPP.
“Based on the sensitivity of the case, it is difficult to grant bail. Bail will be the discretion of the court,” Osunsanmi said.
The case was adjourned until August 13.
