A 26-year-old suspect, Rilwan Raji, has appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for unlawful possession of firearm.
The accused and other members of his gang, who are now on the run, were arrested on May 11, 2018, while planning to commit crime with one locally-made cut to size single barrel gun with three unlicensed expanded cartridges.
Inspector O. Benson, the prosecuting officer, told the court the defendant and other gang members were also “caught with some substance suspected to be Indian hemp.
According to Benson, only the Inspector General of Police, or any other licensed authority has the authority to issue firearm to any individual.
He said the crime constitutes two count-charge, bordering on conspiracy and illegal possession of a weapon.
The prosecutor said the crime is punishable under Sections 328(d) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.
The presiding Magistrate, O. Sule Amzat, granted the defendant N200, 000 bail, with two sureties in like sum. She said they must submit to the court two years tax clearance paid to the Lagos state government.
Amzat adjourned until November 22, 2018.
